Troubleshooting: Investigation into fire pump malfunctions on developer owned water system. Owner called Mr. Ackerman in to investigate why a new fire pump was cavitating during start-up testing. Review of the system and its operation concluded that it was due to excess air in the distribution system being drawn into the pump. The distribution system had not been properly purged prior to operation and a dead-headed section of pipe leading to the next phase of the park contained enough air to choke the fire pump suction resulting in the cavitation. The problem was solved by closing a valve leading to the expansion phase.
